The man behind Leeds Festival will collect the Lifetime Achievement Award at the European Festival Awards next year.

Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, is considered one of the UK’s leading event promoters and will receive his latest award at a ceremony in Groningen, Holland, on January 14.

As the driving force behind Reading and Leeds Festivals as well as Latitude Festival and overseas events including Electric Picnic, Benicassim and Hove and Berlin Festival, Mr Benn has a CV which also includes being the former licensee of Glastonbury Festival.

Mr Benn, who is also chair of Wembley Stadium’s board of directors, is one of only two Britons to have won the award, which has been handed to the likes of Michael Eavis, Jan Smeets and Leif Skov in the past.

He said: “I work with the best in the business and couldn’t do what I do without a really strong team around me; my thanks go to all those individuals past and present who’ve helped to make our events what they are.”
