Leeds drug dealer lied to police after car crash

Leon Brown, 29, refused to stop for officers after they became suspicious of his driving on December 30 last year.
Brown sped off then entered residential areas in Harehills and Gipton, reaching speeds of around 70mph despite dark and frosty conditions.

Hide AdDavid Ward, prosecuting, said a member of the public had to jump out of the path of Brown’s car to avoid being run over during the incident.
Brown eventually lost control of the vehicle as he drove around a bend and struck a lamp post.
Airbags were deployed during the collision and his DNA was later found on one of them.
A small quantity of cannabis and a mobile phone was found in the car. Texts on the phone related to Brown supplying the class B drug to others. Brown fled the scene and contacted police three days later, claiming that his vehicle had been stolen. He continued to deny committing any offences until the day he was due to go on trial. Brown, of Roundhay Grove, Chapel Allerton, pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice, dangerous driving, being concerned in the supply of a class B drug and possession of cannabis. The court heard he has previous convictions for drug offences. Brown was jailed for 16 months.

Hide AdMark Foley, mitigating, said Brown panicked after seeing the police officers. He added that no one else was placed under suspicion when he tried to claim his car had been stolen.
Judge Sally Cahill, QC said: “You are a young man who has previously been to custody for a substantial period in respect of drug offending. Only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”
