An appeal for fond mountaineering memories to mark half a century of scaling peaks has been sounded by a Leeds club.

Leeds Mountaineering Club (LMC), which has 160 members, has covered virtually every inch of Yorkshire grit and limestone as well as terrain in Scotland, Wales and the Alps over the last 50 years.

To mark the milestone the club is aiming to document its achievements and the memories of members by creating a permanent record of its history in a commemorative book.

Former members are being called upon to share their photos and memories ahead of the book’s compilation and a special 50th anniversary gathering in Leeds on July 4.

Mark Beecher, chair of the club, said: “We have such a rich history to be proud of. It’s also an incredibly social club, with friendships forged over walks, climbing, bike rides and the odd pint closer to home.

“To mark this achievement, we want to create a comprehensive record. We are keen to hear from people who once had ties with LMC and who have any pictures, reports or memories of their time with the club, especially in the 1980s and the early 2000s. This will not only form a great book of memories but may also inspire new people to follow in former members’ footsteps.”

The LMC was established in 1965 by four local mountaineers after the Leeds Youth Mountaineering Club, which was set up in 1962, dissolved.

The club’s proximity to the likes of Otley Chevin at Almscliffe at North Rigton along with the Yorkshire Three Peaks has helped it to remain popular over the years.

Club meetings, to which prospective new members are welcome, take place on the first Tuesday of every month at The Palace, in Kirkgate, Leeds, at 9.30pm.
