A BRIDGE which has spanned the River Aire at Armley for 17 years has been hoisted out for maintenance work.

Contractors used a crane to lift the 16 tonne bridge from its site over the river between Cardigan Fields Entertainment complex and Armley Mills museum.

The 31m bridge will be re-painted before being put back in place later this month following the £100,000 renovation project.

Lee Collins, building surveying manager at site owners Land Securities, said the bridge was removed to ensure the River Aire was not contaminated during refurbishment work. Children from Kirkstall Valley Primary School have been invited to take part in a competition to name the bridge.
