Leeds band's iPhone music video up for international award

Alternative rock duo Navigation Day have been nominated in the International Music Video Competition for the footage of the city centre they shot to accompany their single Town.

Band member Spencer Bayles and his wife Sarah filmed the cityscape while hanging out of their car window, and the video will now be screened at the Belgrave Music Hall as part of the festival.

“The idea was to capture the city as a snapshot of the constantly changing face of the modern metropolis,” said Spencer, 38, of Bramley.

He and bandmate Tim Hann, who lives in Bingley, met through the city’s music scene as students, and now work at Leeds Beckett University while performing in their spare time.

“We shot it once around the centre in February - we started at the law courts and did a loop, finishing in Wellington Street. We just drove round on a Sunday afternoon with Sarah hanging out of the window with an iPhone.

“We entered the competition on a whim really, because of the local interest. There are some big names and just to be included is a thrill for us. We’ve been going to the festival for many years as punters so to be on the programme is amazing. It would be great to win,” added Spencer.

There are 17 other music videos in the competition, with screenings at the Belgrave on November 9 at 6pm.

Town is taken from the pair’s new EP, Mid-Decade Blue, which is available from iTunes.
