Yorkshire: Homes added to flood warning list

More than 50,000 extra homes and businesses in Yorkshire are set to get free flood warnings from the Environment Agency.

The extra properties, which have a high to medium risk of flooding, will receive the warnings over their landline telephone from the end of this month.

At present, 22,700 Yorkshire properties at risk of river or sea flooding are registered with the Environment Agency's warning service.

Now it is sending letters out to 56,000 more Yorkshire homes and businesses which will automatically be signed up.

Regional flood and coastal risk manager Phil Younge said: "The new extended service will benefit thousands of people across Yorkshire.

"We would still urge anyone whose property is at risk of flooding to sign up to Floodline Warnings Direct."
