Yorkshire brewer sought for Tetley

BREWING giant Carlsberg is looking for a Yorkshire brewery to take on the contract to produce Tetley's bitter when the firm's renowned brewery in Leeds shuts in two years' time.

The firm says it has already had talks with Yorkshire brewers about its long-term plans to "outsource" the brewing of Tetley beers including cask bitter – real ale – when the 200-year-old Hunslet brewery closes.

Carlsberg has also said that it is committed to ensuring that Tetley cask bitter will continue to be brewed – a commitment which campaigners say had not been made before.

Cask beers are made using traditional methods and ingredients.

Carlsberg's UK chief executive Isaac Sheps has told the brewing industry's trade press that talks are being held with Yorkshire brewers.

The county has several breweries with the capacity to take on the Tetley contract, though there have been no indications that they would be willing to do so.

They include John Smith and Sam Smith at Tadcaster, Taylors at Keighley, and Theakston and Black Sheep at Masham.

The Yorkshire Evening Post is campaigning for Tetley's to be produced in its home city – Leeds.

The campaign has won support from MPs across Yorkshire and has been taken up in the House of Commons.

Mr Sheps said Carlsberg is planning a new marketing campaign to promote Tetley.

Barrie Pepper, internationally-known Leeds-based author and expert on the brewing industry, said: "They are saying Tetley's cask ale is safe, which is an interesting development. It is more than they have said before."

The Campaign for Real Ale also welcomed the commitment.

Earlier, Carlsberg UK said: "Tetley's will continue to be brewed with the same care and passion that it always has been and we will ensure that its great quality remains the same.

"We are absolutely committed to continuing to brew Tetley's in the UK, ideally in the North, and if a suitable partner can be found in Yorkshire then this would be our clear preference."

The Hunslet brewery is expected to close in 2011 with the loss of 170 jobs.
