Yorkshire: Unwanted old cars can raise money for charity

A Yorkshire charity is to benefit from a "bangers and cash" scheme which uses unwanted cars to boost good causes.

Carers' Resource, which has bases in Harrogate, Ripon, Skipton, Bradford and Keighley, has become one of the first in the county to team up with Giveacar, a social enterprise which collects unwanted and unused cars for charity.

Cars are collected free-of-charge nationwide by Giveacar and sold through an online auction or disposed of at an authorised treatment facility.

Proceeds from the sale are donated to a charity of the car owner's choice, or one of Giveacar's partner charities – such as Carers' Resource, which supports 10,000 unpaid carers across the region.

Even if the banger is scrapped, it still nets the good cause 40.

The Dawson family, who live at Hartwith, between Harrogate and Ripon, got the scheme off to a racing start by donating an unwanted truck to the charity via Giveacar.

Anne Wells, marketing and fundraising coordinator of Carers' Resource, said: "We are thrilled to be one of the first chosen beneficiaries of this ground-breaking 'green' scheme.

"As well as a great recycling initiative, it also gives us access to an untapped source of income, enabling us to take our work even further into the heart of the Yorkshire community. Each car donated raises an average of 80."

The aim, as well as raising money for good causes, is to discourage car owners from abandoning their old vehicles.

Tom Chance, chief executive of Giveacar, welcomed the partnership with Carers' Resource.

He said: "The DVLA reports that two million cars are taken off the road, yet only one million cars are disposed of at an authorised treatment facility. If you ring a number which you saw on a lamppost, there is every chance your car will be picked apart, then left to rot, causing considerable environmental damage.

"At Giveacar, we only use authorised facilities that recycle a minimum of 85 per cent of the weight of your vehicle."
