Yorkshire: Power cut hits homes

More than 150 homes were left in darkness for several hours last night after vandals struck a power cable.

Householders in the villages of Gateforth, Brearton and Thorpe Willoughby, all in North Yorkshire, were affected by the blackout which happened at around 3.30pm yesterday.

A spokesman for power operator YEDL said a power cable in the nearby area was vandalised.

He said 79 of the 154 affected homes had power restored in an hour after an emergency electricity supply kicked in.
