Yorks Skateboarder died of heart failure

HORRIFIED friends watched a teenage skateboarder from Normanton collapse in a supermarket car park hours before he died.

Scott Angus, 18, died from a heart defect no-one realised he suffered from after he spent the day riding and doing tricks with friends.

The teenager, of Albert Street, Normanton, was with a group of friends in the car park of Lidl supermarket in Normanton when he collapsed.

One friend said he had seemed "hyper" and red in the face that day.

Scott suddenly fell from the skateboard to the ground.

At first they said they believed he was "messing about".

But they called an ambulance when they realised he was unconscious and his lips were beginning to turn blue.

Scott was rushed to Pinderfields Hospital but despite the efforts of medical staff to save him, he was pronounced dead just before 9pm the same day – May 10 – Wakefield Coroner's Court was told.

A statement to the inquest from Scott's father Noel said that he arrived at the car park shortly after being contacted by one of his son's friends.

He said the family did not realise how serious the situation was and assumed Scott had fallen from his skateboard.

But a post-mortem report revealed no injuries which could have contributed to the teenager's death.

Instead it was found that Scott had an enlarged heart for his age and that a defect with the electrical impulses controlling his heart was what caused him to collapse.

Recording a verdict of death from natural causes, West Yorkshire Coroner David Hinchcliff said: "What in fact happened was he collapsed due to his heart stopping."

He added: "We can't rule out that it could have been the fact that he was engaging in fairly energetic activity at the time which might have brought this on."
