Yorks: Discount chain calls in receiver again

DISCOUNT retailer Ethel Austin, which has branches across Yorkshire, has called in administrators for the second time in two years.

The group and its sister homewares chain Au Naturale appointed insolvency firm MCR as administrator on Monday after the business failed to pick up following its rescue in 2008.

Hundreds of jobs are in jeopardy as MCR seeks to find a buyer while the shops carry on trading.

Merseyside-based Ethel Austin's nearly 300 stores include branches in Leeds's Merrion shopping centre, Morley, Normanton, Dewsbury and Batley.

The group has come under pressure from rival budget chains such as Primark and Matalan.

MCR said those problems had been compounded by adverse weather at the height of the January sales.
