Key Fisheries has been crowned YEP Fish & Chip Shop of the Year, after waves of customers voted for their favourite fryer.

The chippy is a favourite with hundreds of hungry locals.

The chippy is a favourite with hundreds of hungry locals.

It fought off strong competition from 31 other nominees, all put forward by YEP readers, who voted in their thousands.

“We really do have the best customers in the world and they have supported us all the way,” beamed proud owner Javid Barardoust-Kari.

“The team are on first-name terms with our regulars and know precisely when they’ll be popping in,” he explained.

“It means we can prepare the right amount of fish and potatoes in advance, ready to cook fresh to order when they arrive,” he added.

It’s this level of freshness and customer service that keeps people coming back, said Javid, who opened Key Fisheries in 2008 with business partner Caroline Ghobadi.

But he believes another factor is the portion sizes, which are generous to say the least.

“We serve lots of families, so our 25-oz fishes are a huge hit, because three to four people can feast on them,” he explained.

“You wouldn’t believe it, but those fish are half a metre long!”

Another factor is Key Fisheries’ excellent suppliers, who only source and sell the freshest fish.

Add to this the fact Javid knows the industry inside out, having grown up in north Iran where his dad had a caviar business, and you have a recipe for success.

“The YEP Best Chippy competition always gets readers talking, because people are really passionate about their local chippy being part of their community,” said Sean Greenish, YEP promotions co-ordinator.

“This award is extra special because nominations and votes are cast by customers, so Javid and his team should be really proud of the relationship they have with their regulars.”
