Money has continued to flood into the YEP offices as our generous readers show their support of the Half and Half Appeal.

Over the past week, we have featured the amazing work of Leeds’ two hospices - St Gemma’s and Sue Ryder-Wheatfields - and as our £3m target edges ever closer, we are now calling on you to help boost their coffers.

With the launch of our new website for online donations at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/YEPHalfandHalfAppeal, it has never been easier to support the appeal - believed to be the oldest campaign in regional newspaper history.

All money which comes in is split evenly between Leeds’ two hospices and now we want you to show us what you are doing to help keep these vital services going.

Every day in the YEP we will be publishing a list of donations to the cause - so let us know what you have raised to see your name or organisation in the paper.

If you organise an event, drop us a line and we can feature your fantastic efforts in the paper.

Nicola Furbisher, the YEP’s managing editor, said: “Over the last week the Yorkshire Evening Post has highlighted just some of the amazing work behind the scenes at Wheatfields and St Gemma’s Hospices.

“Their dedicated staff help to ensure that thousands of families across the city are given the support they need to help them through some of their darkest days.

“Whether it is a shoulder to cry on or someone to care, the staff at these two hospices help to transform lives.

“Our Half and Half Appeal has been inundated with touching messages and donations in memory of loved ones over the last three decades.

“And now we are calling on even more of our loyal readers to dig deep. We are asking businesses, organisations, schools, families and individual fundraisers to show their support to help ensure these two hospices can continue their life-changing work.”

Kerry Jackson, chief executive of St Gemma’s Hospice, said: “Please support the vital work of the Leeds’ hospices.

“We really rely on you so please do whatever you can. We promise to spend your donations on providing expert care for the people of Leeds. Thank you for your continued support.”

Helen Ankrett, manager of Sue-Ryder Wheatfields, said: “Please encourage your family, friends, colleagues and local communities to support the Half and Half appeal and help us to hit £3 million! All the money raised will be going directly towards delivering patient care at your two local hospices in Leeds”

Each year the hospices need to raise millions of pounds to fund the care they provide. In Wednesday’s YEP we showed a breakdown of costs at each hospice - which included prices such as £2 to pay for an patient information pack at St Gemma’s to £5,500 to pay for a day’s care at Wheatfields.

So all donations - large or small - are vital to keep the hospices going.

One of the key services which will benefit from donations to the Appeal is the 24/7 nursing provision at both hospices.

As reported in yesterday’s YEP, both St Gemma’s and Sue Ryder-Wheatfields want to extend their community nursing from Monday to Friday to over the weekends as well, at any time of day.

This care is incredibly important so those with terminal illnesses who want to remain in their own homes, can.

But it needs your donations to guarantee its future.

Let us know what you are planning to raise cash for the cause, or why you support the hospices.
