LIFE-SAVERS: St John Ambulance first-aiders at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

They are the unsung heroes who keep people safe off the pitch while Leeds Rhinos stars throw their weight around on the pitch.

A dedicated team of first aiders help to make sure that thousands of the region’s rugby fans stay safe during matches.

Over a dozen volunteers from St John Ambulance are on hand to help look after the crowds in Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Among them is community responder and control room leader James Shaw.

James, 28, helps to make sure that first aiders are stood in the right places and can quickly tend to emergencies.

He said: “We deal with
everything including slips, trips and people who are seriously poorly.

“I once had to deal with someone who had a minor stroke.

“Sometimes at the matches we get people coming up to use to thank us for being here and looking out for people.”

Leeds Rhinos recently threw their weight behind the Yorkshire Evening Post’s First Aid For All campaign.

We have teamed up with St John Ambulance to launch a campaign to teach first aid skills to 500 people in Leeds.

James, who is also a unit leader for the charity in Wetherby, added: “It’s very important to learn first aid because it is a simple skill that can save a life.

“You can then pass on your knowledge and other people can then pass it on.”

We are giving readers the chance to learn lifesaving techniques to help them cope with emergencies.

Our special three-hour courses will teach readers basic first aid.

The YEP has launched a new series of courses starting on Monday, January 14.
