Parents in Leeds are being urged to learn lifesaving skills this New Year. More than half of the city’s parents lack the first aid skills to save their child’s life in an emergency.

Shocking figures reveal that thousands of people die in situations where even the most basic of first aid could have given them a chance of life. Nationally fewer than one in 10 people have the skills to save a life.

The YEP has teamed up with St John Ambulance to launch a campaign to teach first aid skills to 500 people in Leeds.

Our First Aid For All campaign is giving readers the chance to learn lifesaving techniques to help them cope with emergencies. Our three-hour courses have already taught lifesaving skills to over 125 people. Your YEP is urging you to make learning first aid one of your New Year’s resolutions this year by signing up to our next batch of courses. Simon Dunn, St John Ambulance regional director for the North East, said: “One of our key messages is nobody should die for want of first aid.

“Some of the most simple skills between a life lost and a life saved can be taught in a relatively short space of time. YEP readers can help to save a life by taking some very simple steps.”

David Nicklen, St John Ambulance’s regional manager for training and community projects, added: “We are delighted with the response from the people of Leeds. By attending this three-hour course supported by the YEP you are equipping yourself to deal with a serious first aid incident until help arrives.

“We are getting enthusiastic and positive feedback from those who are attending ranging from Ed Balls to the good citizens of Leeds. St John Ambulance research shows over 50 per cent of parents wouldn’t know what to do if the need arose resulting in life being needlessly lost.”
