The hunt for the region’s best medics is on – after last year’s Doctor of the Year described his win as the “icing on the cake”.
We have launched the Yorkshire Evening Post Best of Health Awards 2013 to recognise hero health workers.
For the second year, the stars of the field are set to be honoured in the event.
The Doctor of the Year category – sponsored by Rainbow Windows – aims to honour medics, either working in hospitals or as family doctors.
They may be an experienced specialist or a junior doctor who has already made an impressive contribution.
Last year it was GP Dr Steve Ledger, from Fountain Medical Centre in Morley, who scooped the top award.
He was described as a “hero to his patients” and hailed for making extra efforts, including ringing with test results at the weekend.
Dr Ledger said it was an honour to have been nominated and he was thrilled to be named winner.
The doctor, who has worked for the practice for nearly 30 years, said that recognition was unexpected but a “lovely bonus”.
He added: “The feedback from colleagues, practice staff and patients was most gratifying and very humbling.
“I feel very fortunate in my career as a GP, working with others who are all committed to providing high quality healthcare in a tight-knit community like Morley. The YEP award was, for me, ‘the icing on the cake’ of all of this and I thank the organisers and sponsors for their efforts in making the event so special.”
Other categories in the awards, for which Sovereign Health Care are the main sponsors, include for nurses and midwives.
