A DEDICATED employee at a Leeds shopping centre is celebrating almost four decades in her job.

Sue Maszkowski, 60, has worked at the Merrion Centre for 39 years and has fond memories of her time at the Leeds landmark – one of which was the installation of the much-loved Emmett machines.

Sue first joined Town Centre Securities (TCS), which owns the site, in 1976, as company secretary.

She went on to become chief executive Arnold Ziff’s personal assistant – a role she had for 20 years.

Speaking about her late boss, she added: “He was amazing – a true friend.

“[His death] has left a big hole in my life. He was like a second dad.

“He knew the names of all the staff and all the cleaners at the centre.

“He did so much for the city of Leeds and I was so proud to be associated with him.”

Sue, 60, is now the property and facilities manager for TCS.

She added: “It’s such a varied job. You never get two days the same, and I love that.”

It’s also a landmark year for the Merrion Centre, which celebrates its 50th birthday in May.

To mark the occasion, the YEP has joined forces with the city’s oldest shopping centre for a brand new competition.

We are looking for local aspiring artists to create a commemorative piece of artwork, which will go on display at the site.

The competition winner will receive £1,000.

The judging panel will be made up of Edward Ziff, chairman and chief executive of Town Centre Securities PLC, Marjorie Ziff, a representative from the Yorkshire Evening Post and art critic Robert Dutton.

The winner will be informed on May 22 and will be invited to the centre for the official unveiling of their artwork on May 26 – the Merrion Centre’s 50th birthday.

All entrants must be over 16 years old and submit their work by Sunday, May 18.

Artwork should be sent to 50th Art Competition, Merrion Centre, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS2 8NG.

All entries should be clearly labelled with the entrant’s name, date of birth and contact details.

For more information about the competition, visit http://merrion.co/art.
