Woman tames Leeds Carnegie stars

Standing at 5ft 8ins and weighing just 10 stone, you might expect Leeds Carnegie to leave Amy Brightmore with a few bruises.

But the team's latest fitness expert says the players are well-behaved in training sessions for the run-up to the new season.

Amy, 27, is the club's new sports scientist, helping the squad prepare their bodies for the upcoming 2010-11 Aviva Premiership.

Her tasks include measuring heart rates and body mass, as well as helping the players with their weights training in the gym.

The Leeds Metropolitan University graduate said: "People always ask me what it's like being a woman and working with all these big rugby players.

"But I can't fault the lads at all, they are brilliant guys. They always listen to me and take on board what I'm saying. They're very respectful."

Amy is on a 12-month secondment from Leeds Met's sports science department, where she works as a Carnegie sports officer.

She first became involved with Leeds Carnegie around 18 months ago, working alongside performance director Steve Nance. He has now returned to Australia, allowing Amy to come on board full time for the new season, which starts on September 5 against Bath.

She said: "Steve did such a good job and I think they really wanted the team to carry on with what they were doing. So because I already knew the ropes and had a good relationship with the lads, I was offered a contract – an amazing opportunity."

Due to the close relationship between the club and Leeds Met, Amy is able to use the university's facilities in her training work. As a youngster, she was always keen on sports – and although football was her favourite, she grew to love rugby union.

She said: "At school, it was always sport sport sport, but I was more on the academic side, which is why I decided to study sports science. Football was always my sport but as I got older, I started watching rugby union, and I got really into it."

"I consider myself very privileged to work here because I know a lot of people would give their right arm to have this opportunity. I don't know what the future holds for me in terms of a career – but I know how lucky I am to be here."
