Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman sustained serious head injuries in an assault following a rugby league game in Castleford last week.

Wakefield District CID are appealing for witnesses to the incident which took place on Wheland Road on Friday April 11, after the Castleford Tigers and St Helen’s rugby match.

It occurred at about 10pm after the victim, a 73-year-old local woman, was knocked to the floor by a man who barged by her after he had an altercation with another person at a burger van.

The woman banged her head in the fall and as a result suffered a serious head injury.

She was assisted by passers by and taken to Pinderfields Hospital where she is in a stable condition.

The suspect meanwhile, continued to run away into the crowd.

He is described as white and was wearing a grey hooded top.

DC Fay Wroe of Wakefield CID, said: “This incident took place at a busy time when there were plenty of people around and will have been witnessed.

“I would ask anyone who saw the woman being pushed, the initial altercation, or who can help us identify the suspect to get in touch.

“Information can be given to myself at Wakefield District CID on 101 or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
