Widow's plea over husband's asbestos death
A widow is appealing for former power station workers to come forward to help an investigation into how her late husband may have been exposed to asbestos.
Philip Silkstone was diagnosed with mesothelioma – a form of lung cancer linked to asbestos – in February 2007 and died six months later aged 75.
His widow Barbara, from Garforth, Leeds has law firm Irwin Mitchell investigating a claim on her husband's behalf.
One line of inquiry relates to several years in the 60s and 70s when he was a scaffolder at Drax power station.
Mrs Silkstone, 66, said: "My husband had worked all his life. He enjoyed his garden when he retired and he enjoyed having a bet on the horses and a pint at the weekends, but most of all he was a loving husband who looked after me and his home.
"It's awful that through no fault of his own, my husband and many other workers have had to suffer such a terrible disease."
Ben Mitchell, an industrial illness specialist at the Leeds office of Irwin Mitchell, is representing Mrs Silkstone.
He said: "Mesothelioma is a devastating form of incurable cancer that is extremely quick and aggressive from the time the symptoms first come on.
"Unfortunately the disease has a very long incubation period from when someone first comes into contact with asbestos dust. It can take 20 to 30 years after the exposure."
