Alwoodley Primary, with almost 500 pupils, has been judged as outstanding by education watchdog Ofsted.

The multi-cultural school off King Lane provided a harmonious learning environment, said inspectors.

"The school has a wonderful sense of community," said their report. "Behaviour is excellent and everyone gets on exceptionally well together."

Academic standards were high and pupils took part in many trips, international-themed days, after-school clubs and environmental projects.

The curriculum, pupil tracking, healthy school meals, extended services and early years provision were also highlighted as strengths.

Inspectors were particularly impressed that all pupils, from the nursery onwards, learnt Spanish language and culture.

Head teacher Jane Langley said: "I am delighted that our school has received an outstanding Ofsted report which is a credit to all our amazing team of children, staff, parents and governors.

"I am particularly proud that Ofsted said Alwoodley provides an excellent all-round education and wonderful sense of community.

Awards

"The inspector commented that our 10 national awards reflected our proactive, rigorous approach to consistently aiming high in all areas."

In their report, inspectors described pupils as coming from "a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds".

Almost half the children came from different ethnic minorities, for which English wasn't their first language.

Most pupils' attendance was good, but overall it was only average because a number of families took extended holidays to Asia.

Although starting their school life with below-average abilities overall, the children made excellent progress in maths and English, and particularly in science.

"This is an outstanding school that enjoys an excellent reputation locally," said Ofsted.

"Parents are delighted not only with the standards it achieves, but also with the exceptional level of care provided and the outstanding promotion of the children's personal development."

Miss Langley, said the report, "led by example", learning Spanish alongside the pupils and joining in after-school clubs.

"The head teacher enjoys enormous respect from parents, shows boundless enthusiasm and a burning desire to achieve excellence. She leads from the front and is extremely well-supported by very professional leaders and managers."
