Whitkirk woman celebrates 100th birthday

No fewer than five generations of one family were present when relatives celebrated the 100th birthday of Whitkirk resident Mrs Ivy Jones. Click here for full details.

They gathered at Colton Lodge nursing home in Whitkirk where Mrs Jones has been resident for a few weeks.

The party was called in a hurry after the family realised Ivy would be 100 – they thought she was only 99!

"Social Services got in touch a couple of weeks ago and wanted to see her birth certificate," said her daughter Patricia Bastow, 71, of Montagu Road, Wetherby.

"It was then that we noticed she was born in 1907!"

Patricia's daughter, Linda Waterson, 44, was at the party with her daughter Sandra McKay, 24.

She, in turn, brought along her new baby daughter, Mia, who was born

two weeks ago.

Ivy had a twin sister, Lilian, who died at the age of 64.

"She was 10 minutes older than Ivy," said Patricia, "and never let her forget it! She was always the older sister."

Ivy married Tom Jones after meeting him at Holbeck Fair Feast.

They had four children: Patricia, her sister Mavis, of Pudsey, brother Colin, of Castleford, and an elder brother Raymond, now deceased.

A veteran of the Korean War, he passed away about 10 years ago.

Ivy was born in Beeston and attended Crossflatts School but she lived in Gipton for 40 years.

In her youth she was an operative at Blakey's boot factory in Armley.

"She used to dance the Charleston with friends in their dinner hour," smiled Patricia.

Her husband worked with machinery at Stokes and Dalton on York Road, manufacturing cornflakes and sage and onion stuffing.

"My mother is good for her age, and her mind is still there," said Patricia.

"But she is more or less blind – her eyes have gone."

A spokeswoman at Colton Lodge said: "Ivy gets up quite late. She can't walk about and is in a wheelchair but she enjoys the soaps on TV and is bright enough to have a conversation."
