The school beat off fierce competition from 19 others to lift the prestigious title after polling more than 1,350 votes.

Steve Clark, headteacher at Whitkirk Primary, said: "We are absolutely thrilled and delighted to have won this competition. We have many stars here at Whitkirk and look forward to trying to retain our title next year."

The school's winning entry was Journey To Bethlehem which was produced by Year 2 class teacher Catherine Sunderland.

As winners they can now look forward to a Christmas party for their entire class, courtesy of Hollywood Bowl in Leeds as well as a DVD of their winning performance.

More than 12,000 votes were cast in this year's competition which saw St Paul's Primary in Whinmoor, Leeds finish in runners-up spot and Cottingley Primary in third place.

Garforth's Strawberry Fields Primary finished in fourth place while Beecroft Primary in Kirkstall finished fifth.

Yorkshire Evening Post Digital Editor, Geoff Fox, said: "Congratulations to Whirkirk Primary whose song proved the most popular among the thousands of people who voted.

"This year's competition has proved bigger and better than ever before with a really high standard.

"We have been astounded by the huge amount of votes and interest the competition has generated.

"Despite being only in its second year it is clear that the competition has become a firm favourite in the run up to Christmas."

Geoff added: "Can I say a very big thank you to all the schools who took part."
