A quest to break a decorative record has been launched – to create the world’s longest line of bunting.

The wacky attempt is being organised as part of a campaign promoting physical and mental health.

Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which provides mental health services in Leeds, is hoping people from across the area will create pieces of bunting.

More than 15,000 pieces are needed, which together will create a string almost three miles long.

Through the Olympic-inspired What’s Your Goal? campaign, people are being urged to set a goal related to being more active or increasing their fitness, and represent that on the piece of bunting.

Chris Butler, chief executive of Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Evidence shows that setting goals is good for our wellbeing.

“Writing down a goal means we’re much more likely to achieve it. We hope that this campaign will help to inspire the people of Leeds, York and North Yorkshire. We hope to get people talking about mental health and wellbeing and to create a sense of community with our world record attempt.”

Arts and craft chain Hobbycraft is backing the attempt by supplying material and holding creative workshops at their Crown Point store.

Leeds-based Paralympic cycling champion David Stone helped launch the What’s Your Goal? campaign at the Ice Cube in Millennium Square, Leeds.

He said he was pleased to be an ambassador for the campaign, along with Andy McMenemy, who completed 66 ultra marathons in 66 consecutive days in 66 UK cities.

Sally-Ann Robinson, a Leeds blogger and student who suffers from mental health issues, added: “My plan is to set a goal weight, size and change my lifestyle to make exercise a method to improve not only my physical health but also my mental health.”
