The area will be developed by Leeds City Council and paid for using funds for community development, made available through the development of flats at Union Bridge Mills on Roker Lane.

The new wetlands area will include a pond with native wetland species, along with associate landscaping and tree planting.

It is hoped the area will attract various water-dependent animals to the area, providing the perfect home for frogs, newts and other pondlife, as well as various species of birds.

Coun Mick Coulson (Lab, Pudsey), pictured, d said: "It will be an excellent attraction. We get a lot of people in Post Hill since it was made into a country park. It has been our aim to make it more attractive to the local people and we hope that it will attract more people.

"The plans have gone in so as soon as they come back then we can get on with starting work immediately."

Coun Andrew Carter (Cons, leader of Leeds City Council and executive member for development) said: "We are already investing significant amounts of time and money in providing access to top quality green spaces for people right across Leeds, and this wetlands area will be a fantastic addition.

"It will provide sanctuary for a huge variety of flora and fauna and will be an attractive home for numerous species.

"Not only will the wetlands area be a great destination area for wildlife, it will provide the people of Pudsey and beyond with another top quality green space where they can enjoy the outdoors and see some fascinating wildlife. I am sure this project will prove to be of great benefit to the local community."

The project will cost around 3,200.
