West Leeds: Search for 2012 Pudsey Carnival jubilee queen

QUEEN OF 2011: Eleanor Hemingway.

QUEEN OF 2011: Eleanor Hemingway.

Pudsey is set to raise the flags and celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee by launching the search for the town’s very own queen.

Thousands of people are expected to snake around the market town’s streets to celebrate the annual carnival parade.

Dedicated volunteers are now looking for their very own carnival queen to kick-start the celebrations.

Volunteer Maureen Harrison has been involved in making the event a success for decades.

She said: “People need to support the carnival.

“This year’s theme is celebrations and jubilations but it doesn’t necessarily mean everyone turning up with a crown on.

“It will be themed around the diamond jubilee.

“We thought about putting the carnival on the same weekend as the jubilee but we thought there would be far too much going off that weekend.”

This year’s carnival will be held on Saturday, May 26, and a parade will make its way to the main events arena at Queen’s Park.

Proud Eleanor Hemingway, 11, donned the crown and was flanked by fellow Greenside Primary School pupils to celebrate last year’s extravaganza.

The first Pudsey Carnival took place on July 1, 1898 – and, after a break, was revived in 1923.

Mrs Harrison said the historic carnival was an important day, not only for the people of Pudsey, but also for the city of Leeds as a whole, usually attracting up to 10,000 people on the day.

The event, held at Queen’s Park, receives funding from Leeds City Council and also raises lots of money for chosen charities.

The carnival also allows many other charities and groups to fundraise on the day itself with stalls and events.

Budding carnival queens should be 10 or 11 years old and they should write a letter stating why they would make a good Queen.

They should include their name, address, date of birth, telephone number and a photograph. Write to Kazia, 56 Moorland Road, Pudsey, Leeds, LS28 8EJ, or contact 01274 662801.
