A POLICE marksman shot a cow dead after it escaped from a Wakefield abbatoir and jumped a fence.

The animal made a bid for freedom when it fled from the abbatoir on Flanshaw Way on Monday afternoon. (Nov 26)

Abbatoir staff alerted police just before 2pm and armed officers were sent to the scene.

The cow jumped a fence from one field to another and bolted when attempts were made to approach it.

Police feared the cow would jump another fence and pose a danger to the public.

It was shot dead shot just after 3pm.

A police spokeswoman said: “The animal was despatched without incident.”
