West Yorkshire farm with Robin Hood link for sale

A historic farm close to the final resting place of folklore legend Robin Hood has gone on the market for the first time in five centuries.

Mock Hall Farm, near Liversedge, has been put up for sale with an asking price of between 450,000 and 500,000 after spending nearly 470 years in the hands of the Armytage family.

Legend has it that Robin Hood and his sidekick Little John had been lured to Kirklees Hall, which was the home of Robin's cousin the Prioress of Kirklees.

She claimed that she needed to draw some of Robin's blood for medicinal purposes but she deliberately drew too much.

As Robin bled to death he told Little John to fire an arrow from the window to mark his burial ground and the arrow landed just over half a mile from the Leeds Road farm.

Barnsley-based Wilbys are handling the sale of the 2.8 acre property which has three large bedrooms in the main house and a cottage with three further bedrooms.

Agricultural surveyor Edward Tabner said: "The family has a long, long history with the property, which has been extended and adapted over the centuries.

"It is a real piece of history and the association with Robin Hood adds to the attraction.

"This is the first time this house has changed hands since the 16th century.

"As it is we have had a number of enquiries and it has attracted a reasonable amount of interest considering the state of the property market."

The sale is thought to have been sparked following the death of Lady Margaret Armytage of Hartshead in 2008.

Her family-–former sheriffs of Yorkshire – took ownership of the farm in 1541 during the reign of Henry VIII.

It is thought that tourists still regularly flock to see the alleged burial place of folklore hero Robin Hood.

Legend has it that the archer and swordsman was notorious for robbing from the rich and giving to the poor and some scholars have argued that the fabled 'prince of thieves' was a simple Wakefield

yeoman.
