Work has begun on an £180,000 facelift for a west Leeds park.

Bramley Park is to be given a raft of improvements thanks to the major cash injection.

The investment has come from the pot of section 106 money held by Leeds City Council, paid as part of planning applications.

Ward councillor Ted Hanley (Lab, Bramley and Stanningley) said: “It’s quite a big scheme and I am very pleased. I think it will be good for children and there are a lot of elderly people who also use the park.”

Around 20 different improvements are to be made, including new front gates at the park, work on footpaths, metal fencing replaced and improvements to sports pitches, seating, the playground and trees.

A wildflower meadow will also be created and the refurbishment is due to be finished in spring.

Coun Hanley said that a well-supported Friends of Bramley Park group had been set up to spearhead the improvements.

“People are putting their views forward about what they would like to be done,” he said.

He added that money had also been set aside for work at Rodley Park, where around £80,000 will be spent.

“It’s taken quite a time to convince them to spend the money,” Coun Hanley added.

“Bramley and Rodley have been let down in previous years but now we are getting the money and involving the public.”

Caroline Gruen, who will stand for Labour in the Bramley and Stanningley ward in next year’s local elections, is supporting the work.

She said: “I think it’s a tremendous project. The changes which are planned with the sports facilities and wild lower area are going to enhance it tremendously.”
