West Leeds: Bid goes in to secure future of Bramley Baths
Volunteers bidding to take over historic Bramley Baths have submitted their plans to Leeds City Council.
The grade II-listed Edwardian baths are currently operating on reduced hours and their long-term future has been in doubt as the council looks to make budget cuts.
The Friends of Bramley Baths have developed a business plan that would put the pool’s management in the hands of volunteers.
Council officers will now assess the details of the bid. If it is successful, the friends group aims to restore the baths to full-time hours and introduce new activities and facilities based on suggestions put forward by the baths’ users.
Friends chairman John Battle said: “I am incredibly impressed by the strong team that we’ve formed to redevelop the baths.
“The strength and depth of talent in Bramley has long gone unrecognised and we have some brilliant, highly-skilled people who have come forward.
“This is proof that Bramley has some real talent to secure its future. The Friends have a lot of hard work ahead but there’s no going back.”
Leeds West Labour MP Rachel Reeves, a leading figure in the campaign to save the baths, welcomed the submission of the bid.
She said: “I am really pleased that the Friends of Bramley Baths have submitted their bid and deeply impressed by the hard work they have put in to get to this stage.
“I am confident that this group of committed volunteers can restore the baths to full-time hours and make it a new, vibrant community hub.
“The strength of community spirit in Bramley has really shone through in the past year since the baths were first threatened with closure.
“I’ll work hard to make sure their plans keep the landmark running at the heart of Bramley.”

Sunday, January 15, 2012 at 04:31 PMI see Rachel Reeves has managed to get her name in the papers again as a leading figure in the campaign. very nice petty she cant answer her emails when other people of Bramley need her to answer questions put to her. About equal rights for men and equal rights for people of 60 living in England what people in Wales and Scotland get but not in England. Yes I did vote for her and Labour in the elections. Seems she like you to vote for her then you are easy forgotten.
