A West Leeds football club is celebrating scoring an award from the Football Association (FA).

Wortley FC was handed the FA Charter standard community club of the year award.

The club, which was established in 1974, has 21 teams with more than 350 juniors and 80 senior members involved with the club.

They were chosen ahead of several other clubs in the
region.

The club offers opportunities to children aged between three and five as they can join the Wortley Football Tots.

Youngsters are welcome to join the clubs youth sides alongside two open age groups with mens and womens sides.

The ceremony, which took place at West Riding FA HQ in Woodlesford, was a time to celebrate the hard work members of the club have put in during the last 40 years.

Honorary president Don Kent, the head coach of the under 21s, Jamie Grand, and the club secretary, Roy Kearsley, represented the club at the awards ceremony.

Mr Kearsley, was delighted with the club’s win. He said: “This is a fantastic achievement in our 40th year and underlines the progress the club has made in recent years.”

He thanked everybody involved with the club, including a management committee, team managers, coaches, team administrators and also the players.

He said: “We are extremely proud to receive this award as it recognises the great effort and achievements the club has made both on and off the field this season.

“Everyone at the club has played a part in this award.”

Jack Matthews, the football development officer from the West Riding FA, said: “From our point of view, we have looked at what Wortley FC have done over the last 12 months.

“They have worked really hard to implement grassroots football, from putting the structure in place behind the scenes, to then getting the players on the pitch.

“They have progressed really well.”

The side, which continues to grow, will host a junior section registration day on Saturday July 12 at Farnley Academy, Chapel Lane. This will be an opportunity for youngsters to complete the club and league registration form for next season.

The club will also celebrate its 40th anniversary on September 7, with a range of matches taking place.

A tournament including teams of five, nine and 11,
will take place at Farnley Academy.
