We have carved their names with pride

TWO soldiers who died serving their country have been immortalised on a West Yorkshire war memorial.

On Sunday, a special ceremony was held to remember Lance Corporal David Kirkness, of the 3rd Battalion The Rifles, and Corporal Jonathan Beynon-Fisher, of the 39 Regiment Royal Artillery, whose names have been added to the memorial in Crigglestone.

As reported in the YEP, L/Cpl Kirkness, 24, from Morley was killed by a suicide bomb blast in Sangin, Helmand province, Afghanistan, in December last year.

An inquest heard he was manning a roadblock and was killed after touching a suicide bomber heading for a busy market place.

The YEP reported last week that a main area of Morley's new centre is also to be named after L/Cpl Kirkness in recognition of his sacrifice.

The Duke of Gloucester will officially open the new centre on Wednesday, July 21.

L/Cpl Kirkness' uncle, Steven Sambrook, 55, of Moorside Crescent, said: "The pain of losing David will never end for us."

Jonathan Beynon-Fisher, 33, died last July following a climbing accident.

The father-of-four was on a break in the Lake District alongside fellow soldiers before being deployed to Afghanistan.

His father, Graham Beynon-Fisher, 59, of Howard Crescent, approached Crigglestone Parish Council and asked for the names of fallen soldiers to be added to the war memorial.

He said: "There have been quite a few soldiers from the area killed but there is nothing to remember them by. That is why I was determined Jonathan and Mr Kirkness would not be forgotten."

Members of both families were joined by members of the Royal British Legion and servicemen for Sunday's ceremony at St James's Church, on Church Lane, Chapelthorpe, before heading to Crigglestone Cemetery.

Parish councillor Keith Wainwright said: "In Crigglestone we have the utmost respect for our soldiers who so bravely serve their country.

"It is only right that they should be remembered by the community which they sacrificed so much for.
