WATCH NOW: Strange things behind the scenes at Leeds museum

It will be a creepy Christmas thanks to Leeds's own set of ghostbusters.

The Haunted Leeds team is back on the spook trail with a festive edition of the web-exclusive show.

Six months after becoming the first group to conduct a full-scale paranormal investigation in the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey, the five-strong team returned – this time probing the corridors of the Abbey House Museum.

Medium Barrie John, of Living TV's Most Haunted, said: "I was left in no doubt that there is something out there after spending a night at the Abbey House Museum. We heard plenty of noises, but that was superseded by the sudden turning on of a tap – even though we were in there alone."

The museum includes the abbey's former gatehouse. One of the oldest parts of the site, it dates back to 1152. The gatehouse was converted into a home by the abbey's last abbot, John Ripley, in 1539. From then on, Abbey House became a residence, first for farmers, then for notable Leeds families such as the Butlers of Kirkstall Forge.

The house was sold to Leeds Corporation in 1925 and was opened as a museum in 1927.

During the 1950s Victorian street scenes were added before the entire museum underwent extensive refurbishment in the 1990s.

But the modern facilities have failed to quash the constant tales of ghost sightings.

According to the staff who work at Abbey House, the museum boasts far more unexplained happenings than the ruins across the road.

The voices of children singing, a figure seen in a window's reflection when there was no one else in the building are just two of the recent happenings.

Recently a child asked about seeing a man who could not have been in the museum's Sunday School and a member of staff felt a figure walk past but saw no one.

Haunted Leeds series producer Geoff Fox said: "The first Kirkstall Abbey investigation was one of the most atmospheric we carried out, but while we were filming during the summer we were constantly being told that the best place for spooks at the abbey was across the road at the museum.

"Those stories, coupled with the Victorian street scenes made it the perfect venue for our Christmas special."
