Firefighters have been offered counselling after being called to a tragic incident where a man drowned after becoming stuck in a drain, when he tried to retrieve his car keys.

Popular musician Andy Banks, 49, from Dewsbury, died after dropping his keys down a drain at King Street, Heckmondwike, in the early hours of January 2.

Watch Commander Gary Hatton, from Cleckheaton Fire Station, said: “It was absolutely horrific. We were shocked and we want to highlight to other people to think twice and not enter a drain.

“How many times do people drop keys down the drain and do not see the dangers?

“Everything was against him, he parked near the grate, he lifted the lid up easily, but he slipped in and could not get out and drowned.

“If your keys drop in, get the council to help or seek advice.”

Police are investigating.
