Market trader Jenn Walton is calling on her sisters to help out on her new Leeds stall – and there are plenty to call on.
Jenn, 28, is one of the world-famous Walton sextuplets and she hoping to taste success with her new venture in Kirkgate Market selling “bouquets” and other decorative creations made from sweets and chocolates.
She and her sisters – Hannah, Luci, Ruth, Sarah and Kate – were born to Janet and Graham Walton on November 18 1983 and made international headlines as the world’s only all-female sextuplets.
Jenn’s mum has already been over from the family home in Wallasey, near Liverpool, to help with the business, Sweet Thing, and she is expecting her sisters to pitch in when they can.
She said market stalls were often family run and joked: “They will do it for love and out of the kindness of their hearts. It’s useful to have five sisters.”
For 10 years Jenn worked as an entertainer and holiday rep in Majorca, where she met her boyfriend, Matt, who is from Leeds and was also working on the island.
The couple returned to England last year and settled in Leeds.
Matt also works in the market, at Neil’s Fruit and Veg stall, which is close to Sweet Thing and Jenn said: “It means I can keep an eye on him.
“For a time I worked at the bottom of the market and I liked the atmosphere and the friendly people and so I wanted to open up here myself.
”People in the market will help each other out. Some of the traders have been here a long time and they can offer helpful advice.
She makes all the eye-catching creations herself.
Jenn said: “They can take anything from 30 minutes up to two hours depending on the size so that’s my social life gone for a while.
“We have got off to a good start and I am hoping that in the run up to Christmas business will be good.”
Michelle Hocken, who with husband, Cliff, runs Hayes Seafoods in the market, said: “This is a great place to start a new business and we wish Jenn success.”
