Wakefield: Warning on bogus cabs at Christmas

Christmas revellers in Wakefield are being urged to make sure they avoid bogus cabs and only use licensed hackney carriages or private hire vehicles.

Wakefield Council and police say people wanting to get home after celebrating should not get in a vehicle if they have any doubts.

Drivers of all 1,700 licensed taxis in Wakefield district wear a badge to prove they are licensed.

Council licensing enforcement officers will be out and about to clamp down on any unlicensed taxis operating in the district and making sure licensed drivers and vehicles are complying with the law.

Inspector Richard Close, of Wakefield Police, said: "We need members of the public to be vigilant, report rogue operators and not flag down private hire taxis.

"Plan ahead, know how you are getting home, and if you're in doubt, approach a police officer or night life marshall – they will be happy to direct you to the nearest taxi rank."

Coun Graham Stokes, cabinet member for business and resources, said: "The festive period is a very busy time of year and it can take longer to find a taxi.

"Members of the public should not be afraid to ask to see the driver's badge before getting into the vehicle and if they can't, or won't, then walk away. Our message is be safe this Christmas."

Hackney carriages can be hailed on the street and carry a licence plate with a white background. Private hire vehicles have to be pre-booked and carry a plate with a yellow background.
