Wakefield man faces £2.7m car clocking bill
A WAKEFIELD man has been hit with a £2.7m bill after an investigation into a car clocking scam.
Adrian Hemmingway, 44, from Wakefield, landed the mammoth bill at court this week after it emerged he had made an estimated 7m of criminal cash.
Hemmingway was jailed for 18 months in May last year in connection with the scam which involves reducing the mileage of used cars to make them more valuable.
After his conviction a financial investigation was then carried out by the North East Regional Asset Recovery Payback Team (RART).
This week he appeared before Bradford Crown Court where he was ordered to pay a confiscation order of 2.7m.
During the five-day hearing Judge Shaun Spencer said Hemmingway's total criminal gains were 7,001,103.
Now if he fails to come up with the 2.7m, he will face a further six years in prison and will still have to pay the cash.
