Wakefield is singled out for praise at launch of crimebusting strategy

WAKEFIELD has been singled out for praise by top government officials launching a new national crimebusting strategy to tackle antisocial behaviour.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown this week launched the Safe and Confident Neighbourhoods Strategy.

And the strategy highlights an operation in the Normanton area which involved West Yorkshire Police's Crime Division and local Neighbourhood Policing Team officers working together to target serious offenders.

The report also singles out the Portobello Estate in Wakefield as one of the country's 12 Neighbourhood Pathfinder Areas. These areas will test crime and antisocial behaviour-related neighbourhood agreements.

The new strategy includes:

Bringing in a national police non-emergency telephone number – 101 – by 2012, making it as easy to report antisocial behaviour and crime as it is to dial 999;

Support for communities to negotiate and sign neighbourhood agreements on how their local services, including the police, will keep their neighbourhood safe;

More support for Neighbourhood Watch, including work with Age UK.
