Wakefield’s Craft Hub building shortlisted for design award

Buildings that are a new hub for children with learning difficulties have been shortlisted for a top architecture award.

The Craft Hub, in Wakefield, has made the list for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Northern Network Awards.

Designed by local property gurus Spawforths, the buildings are part of new premises for Pennine Camphill Community, a specialist college that helps with further education and support for young people with learning difficulties.

The centre has taken its place on the awards shortlist alongside ten other projects from across the Yorkshire region.

Students at the Pennine Camphill Community are between the ages of 18-25 and use two interconnecting circular workshops for craft activities including wood carving, textile and basket weaving and pottery, which teach students work skills such as co-ordination, communication, perseverance and self-esteem.

College vice principal William Taylor said: “After four years of planning and waiting, we have been delighted with the final building which has exceeded all our expectations and dreams.

“As a small college we feel honoured to be able to use such a striking building that has given a fresh lift to the work we do with crafts and horticulture. The ability of the teaching staff to work closely together in a thought-out space has added tremendous value to the offer that we can make to our students.

“The ‘wow’ factor on first approaching the building for everyone who sees and uses it lifts expectations and provides a wonderful feel-good factor.”

The RIBA Northern Network Award brings together all three northern regions of the RIBA in a joint initiative to celebrate and reward architecture, landscape and interior design across the north of England.

The RIBA Northern Network awards look for the best new buildings, landscape design and interiors that the north of England has to offer.

RIBA North East and RIBA Yorkshire have run the Hadrian and White Rose awards, respectively, for 25 years.
