A female plumber from Wakefield has been highly commended in a contest to find the country’s best tradesmen.

Veronica Noonan, 25, was one of 3,000 people who entered Britain’s Top Tradesman, which is organised by trade retailer Screwfix.

And she became the first woman to reach the finals of the competition, which has been going three years, after impressing judges with her hard work and commitment.

Veronica said: “It’s not been easy for me being a young woman starting out in the trade, and this award proves that all of the hard work is paying off.

“I found it a real struggle when I started out.

“I did a lot of work for free before I decided I should go it alone. I secured a loan from the Prince’s Trust, set up my own business – Sugar Plumb Solutions – and have built up a great customer base, mainly amongst those who prefer to have a woman working in their home.

“I have learnt a lot, very quickly, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, and I get a real thrill from my work.”
