She’s faced terminal cancer with incredible courage – and now she’s raised £30,000 to support other patients.
Dr Kate Granger’s book The Other Side about going from medic to patient has been a massive success.
Now the 30-year-old’s second book, The Bright Side, is set to follow suit
On Sunday, she will host a fundraising launch party in a bid to collect even more for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre in Leeds.
She said: “I am surprising both myself and my doctors remaining so well for so long and although its not scientific, I think a large part of this is down to my positive attitude.”
Dr Granger, a registrar in elderly medicine at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, was taken ill on holiday in the United States last summer.
Tests eventually showed it was desmoplastic small round cell tumour, known as DSRCT, which affects just one in two million people. She underwent months of chemotherapy at the Yorkshire Cancer Centre at St James’s Hospital in Leeds.
Since then she has gone back to work and earlier this year published her first book, based on her diaries. After it raised thousands, she set to work on its sequel.
Dr Granger, from East Ardsley, said: “It examines my return to work and how illness has changed me as a doctor.”
Already 450 copies have been sold and she and husband Chris aim to raise £50,000.
Chris collected £7,000 by walking the 96-mile West Highland Way in August and they both took part in the 13-mile Jane Tomlinson Walk for All event in Windermere, raising another £2,500.
The couple are also working through Kate’s ‘bucket list’ having recently been on the Orient Express while she’s also working on a third book.
Dr Granger said that Sunday’s event at Kashmiri Aroma in Wakefield came about when managing director Safena Sabir saw media coverage about her.
The Wakefield Wildcats will be there and there will also be a raffle and auction. Tickets, which cost £25 for adults and £10 for children and include a drinks reception and curry buffet, are available from 01924 373223.
