Yorkshire dad Kevin Hodgson is gearing up for a fundraising cycle ride in memory of his much-missed son Declan.

Kevin, 35, from Crofton, near Wakefield, will be taking on the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Peak District mountain bike challenge event later this year.

Declan died at the age of 12 in June last year following a long and courageous battle with a heart condition.

And Kevin hopes the money he raises for the BHF on the 39-mile off-road ride will help stop other families suffering in the same way.

He said: “This is just one of the challenges we have taken on since losing Declan last year. As a family we wanted to raise as much money as possible for the British Heart Foundation and do what we can to prevent this happening to other families.”

Declan was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect as a baby and had surgery at just six months old.

He went into hospital for another open heart op in 2010 before a further bout of surgery in 2013 ended with his family being given the devastating news that there were concerns over the condition of his brain due to a serious bleed. Declan never regained consciousness and his life support machine was switched off later that night.

Kevin bravely tackled last year’s Peak District challenge just three months after losing his son. He was joined by a group of family and friends who named themselves Team Broken Hearts and raised more than £3,000 for the BHF.

The event takes place on September 27. For details on how to register, go to: www.bhf.org.uk/peak
