Wakefield: Council chief in winter grit stocks pledge

Highways bosses in Wakefield say they are “well prepared” for harsh winter weather over the next few months.

Wakefield Council’s highways manager Graham West said the council’s grit supplies are at “healthy” levels.

Last year winter maintenance cost the council around £800,000.

Mr West said they had been able to save around £40,000 on grit this year by working in partnership with other West Yorkshire agencies.

He also urged people to register their interest in becoming snow wardens again this year to help tackle the snow.

And he confirmed that all wardens would be insured for helping to clear snow.

Mr West said: “We’ve been able to save money on salt and have a healthy supply chain, and I have not been asked to make any savings on winter maintenance this year.

“We are well prepared.”

An extended period of harsh winter weather in November and December 2010 meant more than 8,000 tonnes of grit was needed across the roads network in Wakefield district.

Residents interested in registering to become snow wardens can call 0845 850 6506.
