Police have named a man who died after falling into a canal in Wakefield.

John William Morgan, also known as John Exley, 21, from Leeds, went into the water at Fall Ings Road off Doncaster Road in Agbrigg just after 7pm.

Eyewitnesses said a friend jumped in to try and save Mr Exley.

Police and firefighters launched a major rescue operation and the stretch of water was searched by rescue units from Rothwell, Leeds and Brighouse fire stations.

The police underwater search unit also attended and Mr Morgan's body was recovered at 9.30pm on Monday.

Police say the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Tributes and flowers have been left at the scene.
