A NINE-year-old’s birthday pool party at a Leeds sports centre has been saved from going under, after the YEP stepped in.

Julia Peers, from Stanley, Wakefield, was hoping to make her son Mitchell’s 10th birthday an event to remember, booking a 30-capacity ‘commando run’ inflatable party at Rothwell Sports Centre’s swimming pool for February 23.

But bosses at the Leeds City Council-run facility cancelled that and other parties on February 4 after it emerged their inflatable had been condemned on health and safety grounds.

Having asked if a replacement could be found, she claims bosses shunned her attempts for it to go ahead – even after sourcing a replacement inflatable from the council’s own supplier herself.

After she called the YEP, council leisure supremos have sourced a new inflatable and the party, which cost over £100 to book, got the go-ahead last week.

Julia, who works as a personal assistant, said: “It’s definitely a positive outcome. At the end of the day, you just want to give your kids the best party you can.

“The council told me that the suppliers said there wasn’t one available when blatantly there was and that’s what pushed me to get involved with the YEP.”

Julia is hopeful all 30 children will still be able to make the party, after two weeks of uncertainty. She said: “All the children are very excited it’s now back at the pool and fingers crossed it all goes very well – that’s all I wanted.”

A council spokesman said: “When we found out the original inflatable we planned to use for the party was no longer fit for purpose, we tried to provide a suitable alternative. However, we were finding it difficult to do so in the time available. Happily, we have now been able to get this sorted in time for Julia’s son and his friends to have a wonderful celebration.”
