VIDEO: Olympian walks Leeds 10K race
MOST of the 11,000 people tackling Jane Tomlinson's Leeds 10K on Sunday will be going round at a steady rate as they try to complete the challenging 6.2-mile course.
Jo Jackson, however, will be walking all the way around – AND she'll still beat most of the field.
Race walker Jo holds the British record for 10km at 44.52, which she set in Sheffield in 2008.
She finished 21st in the Beijing Olympics and has been picked for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team for the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin in August.
Jo is already a regular visitor to the city, where she takes advantage of the facilities and support services at the newly-opened UKA Carnegie National Race Walking Centre at Leeds Metropolitan University.
She will be using the Leeds 10K to prepare for leading an England team at the European Permit Meeting in the Dublin Grand Prix of Race Walking on June 28.
Joining her for the Leeds run, which starts at 9am on the Headrow in the city centre, will be the country's top male marathon runner Dan Robinson, who will be heading the field in the Carnegie Race of Champions, which takes place within the Leeds 10K.
Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist Dan was the only British representative in the marathon in last year's Olympic Games, when he finished in 24th place.
The elite runners will be joined by celebrities including actor John Altman, who plays "Nasty" Nick Cotton in EastEnders, and actor Dean Andrews, who plays DS Ray Carling in the hit BBC series Ashes to Ashes.
It is hoped the event, which was started by the late fundraising champion Jane Tomlinson in 2007, will raise 1 million for charity, beating last year's figure of 750,000.
The run is organised by Jane's Appeal, which raises money for children's and cancer charities including Martin House Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, Yorkshire Cancer Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support and the children's medical research charity Sparks.
