Video: Leeds musician plays world’s tiniest ukulele banjo
A musician entertained visitors at a Leeds shopping centre – by playing tunes on what he claims is the world’s smallest ukulele banjo.
Ken Smith, 78, was joined by Denis Wilson, 83, at the White Rose Shopping Centre, where they were raising funds for Martin House Children’s Hospice.
Ken, from Cookridge, showed off his handmade ukulele banjo – nicknamed Titch – before playing songs including Sweet Georgia Brown, King Of The Swingers and The Sun Has Got His Hat On.
He said: “It’s the smallest in the world – I’ve never seen one smaller.
“It’s made of rosewood and abalone. It’s nice and lightweight but still packs quite a punch.”
Ken and Denis, from Seacroft, are members of the Distinguished Ukulele Stars Appreciation Society (Dukes) and regularly play at shopping centres and markets to raise money for various charities.
Ken, who only started playing the ukulele when he retired aged 60, has made several instruments in the past, including the world’s first bongo-uke, a cross between bongo drums and a ukulele.
