Video: Kids enjoy pancake fun at Leeds Parish Church
With a name like ‘Blessing’ and a church venue, he was always going to have more than a little flour power.
But a combination of expert flipping, lightning speed – and maybe even some flowing-cassock aerodynamics – helped this youngster to victory in the Shrove-tide Pancake Race at Leeds Parish Church.
Eight-year old Blessing Murombo triumphed in his heat, as he lined up against fellow schoolchildren from St Peter’s Church of England Primary School, as well as choristers from the church and the school.
And there was even time for Rector of Leeds Tony Bundock to line up against the choirboys and other church staff.
The annual pancake race event was revived last year after a decade.
This year’s event also co-incided with celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the founding of the school.
The mountain of pancakes was cooked by University of Leeds students and St Peter’s Singers members Sarah Potter, Helen Strange and Helen Kingstone.
The ladies spent the whole afternoon making 250 pancakes, 100 for the races and 150 for the weary participants to enjoy after their pan-tastic efforts.
Miss Kingstone said: “We’ve used a kilo of sugar, 50 lemons, a kilo of chocolate and two litres of Golden Syrup. And I dread to think how many bags of flour!”.
Canon Bundock said the races were “a bit of fun” but would be part of a general awareness and fundraising drive for the church in the coming months.
