We Brits love a good banger. Whether it's shoved between two slices of bread and smothered in tomato sauce; used as the savoury barrier between your egg and beans or chopped up and thrown in with a load of pasta, the sausage is one of our most versatile foods.
Last year, we chomped our way through 600m worth of sausages – or 266,500 tonnes of filling.
There's even a British Sausage Appreciation Society, which promotes everything to do with sausages and even sells merchandise, including sausage-themed boxer shorts, pens, ties and oven gloves, if you're into that sort of thing.
This week is the 8th National Sausage Week and boutique Leeds hotel, 42 The Calls, has launched a 'gourmet sausage challenge' for guests.
The hotel's Yorkshire breakfast menu features no fewer than a dozen handmade varieties of sausage, all sourced from farms in the Yorkshire Dales.
The challenge – open until the end of November – is to eat all 12 varieties in one sitting to win one of 10 complimentary night's stay, worth 180, complete with – although not that you would need it – breakfast.
Let's face it, after scoffing 12 bangers, you'll need a good rest.
Head chef Nigel Stanley said: "The challenge is to eat a dozen sausages in one sitting and the full breakfast. The sausages are all home-made, so they are not full of water and other bits, they are between 80 per cent and 90 per cent meat. Eating all 12 is a proper challenge."
