Police officers from Leeds have spoken about the impact of dealing with fatal road accidents as part of a hard-hitting safety campaign.
PC Paul Jenkinson and Inspector John Sanderson, who are part of the eastern area roads policing team, feature in a video produced by West Yorkshire Police for the festive season.
It aims to highlight the trauma of road tragedies as police urge people not to drive under the influence of drink and drugs.
PC Jenkinson said he still struggled to break the news of fatal incidents.
“In essence what you’re telling somebody is that their life has changed forever,” he said.
“It would be nice to tell somebody that their life has changed forever in a good way by winning the lottery or something like that but what we’re doing is telling them that they’re life is changing for the worse. It does get to you.”
Chief Inspector Mark Bownass, who is in charge of roads policing, said: “Unfortunately this year some people in West Yorkshire will drink or take drugs and then choose to drive, and their actions will have severe consequences.”
